How Family Guy taught me to use AI
I’ve been watching Family Guy since the first episode aired in 1999.
And recently I watched a video about their writing process. They've got a whole room of comedy writers who are (in their words) "the funniest, darkest, most cutting people you'll ever meet."
What struck me is that's exactly what I've accidentally built with AI. Not to replace me but to be my writers' room.
They have this rule in the Family Guy room: "Don't get out of the boat."
Meaning whenever someone leaves, everyone tears apart their ideas. They say it's actually a sign of acceptance. If no one criticizes your work, you're probably not going to last.
The Family Guy team says "Good writers are people with a lot of sh*t to work out." Maybe that's why this approach works so well.
Like I said I've accidentally built the same dynamic with AI.
Claude and ChatGPT are trained to think like me, but also to absolutely destroy my bad ideas. To push back. To make things better.
It's not exactly the same obviously. But there's something powerful about having AI models trained to:
- Think like you (but sharper)
- Write like you (but cleaner)
- Question everything (but constructively)
- Research like a whole team (but faster)
(Honestly, copywriters should study comedy writers more. The way they build tension, handle timing, structure reveals... it's basically a masterclass in holding attention and delivering payoffs.)
